“Homecoming” (回家) presents a new body of work that explores the origins and geneses of things both within and without. It revisits watershed moments that appeared inconsequential but lead to what is significantly irrevocable. This exhibition invites the audience to consider their own landmark moments and paths that were unearthed.

The robot series looks into a line of toys that were originally designed and built in Japan. They were shortly ushered into a western world and given new names and stories. The confluence of these two cultures catapulted them into levels unseen. A true immigrant success story.

The Montebello pieces pay tribute to my introduction to the act of design while as an editor for my high school yearbook. Without knowing the term “graphic design”, I was tasked to create layout spreads for my sections. An instant affinity emerged and paved way to my pursuit in graphic design and was the infancy to my creative career.

The FW pieces capture the disruption to my work in both a literal and figurative sense. Through the interweaving of two Chinese inventions (paper and fireworks), the works play on the idea of analog vs digital and the organic vs the synthetic. Beyond the work, they symbolize the departure I have taken with some of the newer themes I am working with.

Having been born in Taiwan, this show is a return home of sorts and marks my first time exhibiting on the island. My relationship with Taiwan has changed throughout the course of my life: from being home - to being the unfamiliar - to being the home away from home. The evolution continues, but for now, I bring back and share these layered fruits from my time away.
